Using new technology and inspiration from Swedish design, my team and I have created the Stockholm 2042 Winter Olympic Experience, from the logo and pictograms to an educational microsite and an AR streaming platform.

Timeline

Jan 2021 - May 2021 (16 weeks)

Team

Grace Geary, Ryan Shih

Role

UI/UX, Strategy, Visual Design, Animation, AR

Figma, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, Aero

ASK

Design symbols, stories, and experiences for the 2042 Winter Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden.

CHALLENGE

How can we change public perception about the games themselves, while creating a more holistic Swedish Olympic experience?

OPPORTUNITY

Sweden is already known for their simplistic design, how can we translate that into interactive experiences to get fans more excited about the Winter Games?

DESIGN SYSTEM

Inspired by Swedish design and the concept of "lagom", we based our system on 3 principles

LAGOM: not too little, not too much

Parts of a whole

Function dictates form

OLYMPIC EXPERIENCES

By merging physical and virtual experiences, we designed a more informed and personalized way for everyone to watch the Olympics.

The Stockholm 2042 Olympics and NBC have partnered to provide the newest streaming service with an innovative viewing experience, accessible across all devices.

Personalize your viewing experience by creating a profile and choosing from a list of customizable widgets to be displayed on your screen.

Whether you're watching at home, a friend's house, or the local sports bar, your personalized experience is always at your fingertips.

Using AR technology, your widgets can be displayed on any screen in front of you, providing you with customized live feedback anywhere you go.

AUDIENCE

The Olympics bring in a wide variety of viewers from all over the world, so we wanted to focus on targeting the extreme ends of the spectrum in order to cater to everyone.

OLYMPIC STORY

CHALLENGE

People care more about the Summer Olympics than they do the Winter Olympics.

FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM

A lot of people really don't knows what winter sports are and how they work.

OPPORTUNITY

Generate excitement and interest for the winter sports themselves.

VOPmockup 1.png

We created the Stockholm 2042 microsite: victoryofthepeople.com - a database showcasing each winter sport, as a way for a greater audience to understand and visualize the games.

As a further understanding of the sport grows, so does personal investment in the Winter Olympics.

Each page showcases an Olympic Winter Sport, explaining:

What the game is

What the events are

How it's played

MEET NILS

 VICTORY OF THE PEOPLE

Nils is a Swedish name that translates to Victory of The People. He is an Alaskan Malamute, the official sled dog breed. These dogs are known for being friendly, hard working, and ready for the cold, just like our Winter Olympians.

Originally inspired by our team's personal mascot, my Malamute-Husky, Meekalo, Nils was created using low-poly style art.
